Big jump in Telugu speakers in US
With many NRIs settling down in the United States of America, the Indian culture and tradition have begun flourishing in the country. With the number of Indians steadily growing in the US, their languages have also become popular.
In American Community Survey conducted by US Census Bureau, it was announced that Telugu is the third most spoken Indian language in the country. The Bureau says Telugu language stood at third place in the popular Indian languages in the US. Hindi is the most spoken language, garnering the top position. Gujarati came the next.
However, the most notable factor is percentage-wise, the Telugu-speaking crowd grew highest compared to any other Indian language between 2010 and 2018. The Bureau says the number of Telugu-speaking people increased 79.5 percent between 2010 and 2018. In effect, Telugus dominated others speakers of Indian languages.
The Survey finds that the Hindi speaking population grew only by 43.5 percentage. Bengali-speaking population recorded a rise of 68 percent, next to Telugu-speaking population. Tamil speakers increased at 67.5 percent. The study reveals that Hindi population is said to be 8.74 lakh speakers as of July 1, 2018. Compared to 2017, this is 1.3 percent increase. Between 2010 to 2018, Hindi population in US has increased by 2.65 lakh, a rise of 43.5 percent. The Census Bureau says that 67.3 million residents in the US aged over five (which includes native-born, legal and illegal immigrants) does not speak English at home and speak other language at home.
