Ayurvedic Diet for Anemia

Anemia is due to a nutritional deficiency of certain nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Many people in today’s society fail to get enough iron in their diets

There are many factors which can cause anemia. It may be due to a vegetarian diet lacking in the right combination of foods, including plant-based proteins, or living a life so busy that mealtimes are hurried and feature too many processed foods devoid of nutrition.

According to Ayurveda, nutrient deficiencies arise because of imbalanced pitta or due to following reasons

Reasons for the manifestation of Anemia:

1. Heavy exercise (vyayama)– Excess of work, mental strain, loss of sleep, etc lead to indigestion and mal-absorption, and hence the required nutrients are not absorbed properly.

2. Sour and salty food (Amla-lavana ahara)– Intake of a large amount of salty and sour substances lead to reduced circulation and cause tissue toxicity and hence the damage to the body parts (organs).

3. Day sleep/sedentary life (diwaswapna/aalasya)– Proper body exercise is essential for the proper metabolism of the food. Sedentary life, reduced exercise, day sleep etc lead into the improper digestion and metabolism; hence they become the reason for nutritional deficiencie s.

How We Can Correct this Deficiency

Avoid salty, sour and spicy food – These food items direct pitta in an abnormal direction, which causes nutrient deficiencies. So, it is recommended to avoid them.

Tap the benefits of nature’s pharmacy – There are certain plants in nature which help reduce the effects of anemia. The best examples are that of neem, amlaki, and tulsi. Neem is rich in iron. Whereas tulsi and Amla are rich in iron and vitamin C - a vitamin which helps in the absorption of iron.

Anjeer ( Fig ) and date milk – One of the simple remedies to increase hemoglobin in the blood is anjeer and date as both are rich in iron. It is recommended to boil pieces of anjeer, Date, and cardamom in milk on a low flame and drink it at bedtime.

Apple – Apples being rich in iron, arsenic, and phosphorus are highly beneficial in the treatment of anemia. One apple a day keeps the anemia away.

Apricot – This fruit is excellent fruit for the treatment of anemia on account of its high iron content. Apricot has an essential amount of copper that makes iron readily available to the body. The regular intake of apricot increases the hemoglobin level in the body

Banana – Bananas not only stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood but also rice in potassium and iron.

Mango – Unripe mango or the green mango is valuable in treating blood disorders because of its high vitamin C content It increases the elasticity of the blood vessels and helps in the formation of new blood vessels It aids the absorption of food iron

Raisins – As a rich source of easily assimilable iron, raisins enrich the blood and thus useful in treating anemia.

Beetroot – Red beetroot is associated with blood-forming qualities. Due to its high content of iron it regenerates and reactivates the red blood cells, supplies fresh oxygen to the body and helps the normal function of vesicular breathing. It is thus extremely useful in the treatment of anemia.

Spinach – The vegetable has got the high-grade iron content in them. After its absorption in the system, the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells take place. It is thus highly beneficial in building up the blood and in the prevention and treatment of anemia.

Bengal gram – Fresh juice of Bengal gram leaves is a very rich source of iron. It is therefore highly recommended.

Almonds – It contains copper in organic form. The copper, along with iron and vitamins, acts as a catalyst in the synthesis of hemoglobin.

Sunflower seeds – The flour made from sunflower seeds is one of the richest sources of iron in any food. It is, therefore, highly beneficial in the prevention and treatment of anemia.

Honey – Has got a remarkable effect in building hemoglobin in the body. This is largely due to high iron copper and manganese content of honey. Honey helps maintain the right balance of hemoglobin and red blood cells

Beans (kidney, lima, Navy) – Beans are a great source of iron and vitamins. Kidney beans are considered to be the beans that have high iron content. Soybean is low fat and high protein food that fights anemia.

Nuts – Nuts are a great source of iron and will helps to boost the iron levels in your body. It helps you immensely to gain iron levels in your body even when you are on the move
